A highly variable aquatic species thathas macropterous and brachypterous individuals. Due to its variability the species has been described several times under different names. It is considered a beneficial insect because it is a limiting factor of aquatic weeds in the tropical Americas. Paulinia acuminata was introduced in Kenya, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, India, Fiji and Australia as potential agents of aquatic weed biocontrol (Bennett, 1975).
Salvinia auriculata, Pistia striatiotes, Lemna sp., Hydromistria stolonifera, Spirodella intermedia, Azolla filiculoides.
