Gender, form, and etymology
Etymology:
The name Annelotrypa is derived from Annelida (referring to the phylum of segmented worms) and the Greek noun trypa (τρύπα), meaning “hole” or “cavity.” It alludes to the elongated, worm-like appearance of the species and its presumed association with concealed or burrowing habitats inside tree branches, characteristic of many Neometrypini. The name is also inspired by the extraterrestrial “Worms” (Annelidans), fictional alien characters from the Men in Black film franchise, known for their distinctive annelid-like morphology.
