From the Ancient Greek πτερόν (pterón), wing, (Karny 1937) and ὰποτρέχω (apotrechus), avoidant, running away (Brunner von Wattenwyl 1888). A winged version of the wingless genus Apotrechus Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1888.
