Gender, form, and etymology

Etymology:

The genus name is composed of the indigenous Tupi word “iara” and the Latin word atrox (meaning: cruel). Iara is a mermaid of the Brazilian mythology, who has green eyes and brown skin, notorious for attracting and drowning men in the water. The name refers to the combination of green eyes and frontal ocellus and the brownish body colour, characteristic of all individuals captured alive. The gender is feminine.
