Etymology:

The species is dedicated to James D.V. Alvarez from the University of the Philippines Los Baños—researcher par excellence and a dear friend to many. He was a meticulous researcher primarily on the taxonomy, ecology and biogeography of bats—his favourite organism—but his interests also include complementary work on the taxonomy and ecology of entomofauna ectoparasitic on bats.
