Gender, form, and etymology

Etymology:

Greek, θέναρ, thenar, palm of the hand, Greek, κέρκος, cercos, tail (of an animal). The epithet references the conspicuous, flattened shape of the main shaft of the male cercus, particularly in view of the hand metaphor used to denote its various sections.
